Writing for Young Readers

I write to engage both reluctant readers and eager readers through picture books, chapter books, and middle-grade books.

What do I write about now? Many things, but most of my stories take place near the sea. 

1. Mermaids 
2. Sailors (not pirates) 
3. Historical fiction (WWI) 
4. Dolls
5. Animals (moose, bears, dogs…) and cryptids (sea serpent).
6. Ghosts (I enjoy a good ghost story on a foggy, rainy day)

My work was published in Blaze Magazine for Horse Crazy Kids and earned an Honorable Mention in the Writer’s Digest Annual Writing Competition. 

When I was writing a chapter book, I found that hand puppets helped me work out dialogue. The rooster and pig puppets are made by the toy company Easfan. I added sailor hats (originally made for cats) and sewed sailor collars for them. The seagull is not a puppet. He is a stuffed animal by Wild Republic. I added the hat.
